"An example of the hippie way occurred at a convention of radicals where student leaders from around the nation assembled to form an organization to reform universities. As each young radical delivered his oration from the platform, he was pleased to see three hippie representatives from San Francisco, in beards and wearing bells, nod and smile in agreement at everything he said. However, the speakers became increasingly uncomfortable when they found that the hippies nodded and smiled in agreement with what everyone was saying, no matter how different the programs or the points of view. The hippies took the position that it was self-defeating to organize a bureaucracy to oppose a bureaucratic organization, and so they were there to enjoy the speeches, and perhaps some pot."
Jay Haley, "The Amiable Hippie" 1968
"Why would you swear when I say I love you, Father?"
"You're the man who stands on the street corner with a roll of toilet paper, and written on each square are the words, 'I love you." And each passer-by, no matter who, gets a square all his or her own. I don't want my square of toilet paper."
Kurt Vonnegut, God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater 1965
